periASTY: Flexibly adjustable mobility, energy, industry, and governance innovations to improve decarbonisation of periurban areas and accelerate their integration in the transition towards climate neutrality
Programme
Horizon Europe
Project Purpose
The EU co-funded periASTY project supports the green transformation of European peri-urban areas towards climate-neutral, sustainable and resilient environments. The project develops a suite of technological and non-technological innovations – the periInnovations – addressing the fields of mobility, energy, industry and governance. The solutions are co-created with citizens, authorities and stakeholders, and are aimed to decrease car dependency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance industrial efficiency and circularity, and to promote renewable energy and integrated planning.
periASTY will demonstrate these innovations in nine peri-urban Living Labs across Europe: Dublin (Ireland), Limassol (Cyprus), Ljubljana Urban Region (Slovenia), Marseille (France), Guimarães (Portugal), Helmond (Netherlands), Kalamata (Greece), Sofia (Bulgaria), and Sisslerfeld (Switzerland), providing knowledge, governance models and capacity building to accelerate the green transformation of peri-urban and surrounding urban areas.
Project Objective
periASTY envisions fostering the integration of peri-urban areas transition towards climate neutrality by advancing and developing mobility, energy, industry, and governance-related net zero technologies and business models. By integrating sustainable mobility, energy, and industrial solutions, periASTY directly supports the objectives of the Green Deal, Mission Climate-Neutral, Smart Cities, and other EU partnerships for 2030.
A suite of innovations, the periInnovations, is designed to host technological and non-technological solutions. The periInnovations suite offers four groups of innovations:
- periMOBILITY – aims to reduce car dependency in peri-urban areas (active modes, multimodality, mobility services);
- periENERGY – concentrates efforts on reducing emissions and promoting sustainable energy sources (energy system demand, energy charging hubs, renewable local energy communities);
- periINDUSTRY – focuses on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, improving efficiency in industrial operations, and promoting a circular economy and reuse (urban mining, circular economy, local green deals, waste management);
- periGOVERNANCE – supports governance, planning, and decision-making (governance framework for functional urban areas (FUA) digital twins, AI-based data warehouse) and builds capacity among local authorities and stakeholders on implementing climate-neutral concepts, integrated planning, and attracting investments/funding (periSKILLS Academy).
The Regional Development Agency of Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR) plays a key role in the periASTY project as the leading regional public partner responsible for establishing and coordinating the peri-urban Living Lab in the Ljubljana peri-urban area. RRA LUR contributes to two pillars of the periInnovations. Within periGOVERNANCE, it will develop and design a governance framework to support the comprehensive and integrated transition of peri-urban areas towards climate neutrality, with a strong focus on capacity building for local authorities and stakeholders. Within periMOBILITY, and in cooperation with the Slovenian partner NOMAGO, RRA LUR will co-design, implement, monitor, and evaluate innovative sustainable mobility solutions within the Living Lab, contributing to the climate-neutral transition.
