periASTY Project: Joint Stakeholder Workshop Brings Us a Step Closer to Climate Neutrality and Sustainable Mobility in PeriUrban Areas of LUR
The Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR), together with its partner NOMAGO, on the 8th of June 2026 held the first co-creation workshop for sustainable mobility solutions within the framework of the European project periASTY.
Workshop on Co-Creating Sustainable Mobility Solutions – periASTY Project
The meeting focused on the joint planning and design of key pilot measures aimed at reducing car dependency and addressing mobility poverty in selected peri-urban (suburban) areas of the Ljubljana Urban Region (LUR). Within the Slovenian living lab — Living Lab Ljubljana (LUR) — RRA LUR and Nomago d.o.o. will closely collaborate to co-create, implement, monitor, and evaluate innovative sustainable mobility solutions that contribute significantly to the transition toward climate neutrality.
The main objective of the workshop was to gather structured proposals and insights from key actors, as well as to form preliminary agreements, ensuring that the solutions are tailored as closely as possible to the actual needs of citizens and the specifics of local infrastructure. The workshop saw active participation from representatives of the municipalities of Komenda, Trzin, and Mengeš, the Ministry of the Environment and Spatial Planning (MOP), the Company for Public Passenger Transport Management (DUJPP), RRA LUR, Nomago d.o.o., and actual end-users.
Measures of Living Lab Ljubljana (LUR) within the periASTY Project:
Through interactive teamwork, participants co-designed potential solutions within three main measures, with implementation and pilot operations scheduled from September 2027 to March 2028:
- On-demand mobility service: This measure introduces flexible, demand-responsive transport (DRT) services that will efficiently connect lower-density peri-urban areas with major public transport hubs.
- E-bikes: Establishing an integrated regional e-bike sharing network across selected peri-urban municipalities of LUR to tackle high car dependency and enhance “first/last-mile” connectivity to major multi-modal hubs, important transport corridors, key employment centers, as well as railway and main bus stations.
- Mobility poverty: Actively addressing transport poverty – defined as individuals’ and households’ inability or difficulty to meet the costs of private or public transport, or their lack of or limited access to the mobility needed for their inclusion in essential socio-economic services and daily activities.
The successful execution of this workshop has laid solid foundations for the next steps of implementation. Special emphasis was placed on determining the most suitable locations and operational models for the envisioned services. Open dialogue with stakeholders enabled the timely identification of key spatial, technical, and regulatory challenges, allowing us to outline safe and well-considered development paths toward a sustainable and climate-neutral future for the region’s peri-urban areas.
