Sustainable Mobility in Practice: Introducing the Pilot Locations of the periASTY Project in LUR
Within the framework of the EU-funded periASTY project, the Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR), together with its mobility partner Nomago d.o.o. and four municipalities of the Ljubljana Urban Region – Komenda, Log – Dragomer, Mengeš and Trzin – will pilot two advanced sustainable mobility solutions in the local environment: new stations to expand the bicikEL regional e-bike sharing network and demand-responsive transport services in peri-urban areas.
The Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR), in cooperation with other international partners, is developing innovative solutions to achieve climate neutrality in peri-urban areas. The project brings together 35 partners from twelve European countries, who are addressing the challenges of peri-urban areas through nine Living Labs, focusing on four key areas: sustainable mobility, clean energy, low-carbon industry and advanced governance.
Within the Ljubljana Urban Region Living Lab, we are focusing on mobility and governance in close cooperation with Nomago. Together, we are addressing the challenges of high reliance on private cars, dispersed settlement patterns, and limited access to public transport. We will collaborate with four LUR municipalities to pilot test two advanced sustainable mobility solutions in a local test environment:
New Stations for Expanding the Regional E-Bike Network
To expand and fill gaps in the unified regional public e-bike sharing system bicikEL, three new stations will be set up with 3 or 4 e-bikes per station. The municipalities acquiring a new station are:
- Municipality of Komenda: a station in the settlement of Breg pri Komendi,
- Municipality of Mengeš: a station in the residential area along Levčeva ulica,
- Municipality of Trzin: a station near the Trzin Mlake railway station.
These new hubs will enable better connectivity between neighbouring municipalities and fill key gaps in the regional public transport network. Pilot testing of e-bikes is expected to run from June 2027 to March 2028.
Demand-Responsive Transport in Peri-Urban Areas
To improve accessibility in areas with less frequent or no regular public transport lines, we will pilot a flexible demand-responsive transport (DRT) system in:
- Municipality of Log – Dragomer: pilot testing of demand-responsive transport services designed to better connect residents with key local services and public transport hubs.
Pilot testing of demand-responsive transport is scheduled to take place from September 2027 to March 2028.
Long-Term Goal: Sustainable Solutions Beyond the Project End
The main purpose of the pilot implementations is to test the operation of new services in practice, monitor user response, and identify the actual needs of the local population. We aim for these tested measures to prove effective and necessary, ensuring they continue to operate and expand even after the completion of the periASTY project.
