periASTY Partner Meeting in Ljubljana
The Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR), in cooperation with mobility partner Nomago d.o.o., successfully hosted a two-day partner meeting for the European project periASTY in Ljubljana on 14 and 15 October 2026. The event brought together international experts and partners from twelve European countries who are developing innovative solutions for the climate neutrality of peri-urban areas across nine Living Labs.

Connecting Peri-Urban and Urban Centres for a Green Transition
The periASTY project, co-funded by the European Union, supports the green transformation of European peri-urban areas into climate-neutral, sustainable, and resilient environments. Peri-urban areas face specific challenges, including high dependency on private cars, urban sprawl, and limited access to public transport. The project comprehensively addresses these challenges across four key domains: sustainable mobility, clean energy, low-carbon industry, and advanced governance.
Within the Living Lab of the Ljubljana Urban Region, we are focusing on two main areas: mobility and governance. In close cooperation with our key mobility partner, Nomago d.o.o., we are establishing a local test environment where, together with citizens, public authorities, and other key stakeholders, we will co-create, implement, monitor, and evaluate innovative sustainable mobility solutions that will provide residents with better, more accessible, and more sustainable daily transport options.
Two Days of Intensive Work, Knowledge Exchange, and a Field Visit Showcasing Ljubljana’s Transformation
Over the two-day intensive programme, partners thoroughly reviewed the current progress across the entire project. All nine Living Labs presented their ongoing activities, current progress, and next steps. Through interactive workshops and group sessions, we addressed key challenges encountered when deploying solutions on the ground and outlined next steps for the successful execution of pilot projects.
A special emphasis was placed on a professional study visit highlighting good practices in Ljubljana, demonstrating how the city has transformed over the past two decades into a pedestrian-, cyclist-, and public transport-friendly environment. Participants travelled by bus to the emerging Ljubljana Passenger Centre, which will integrate a renovated railway station, a new bus station, and an adjoining commercial-business complex. We then walked along the redesigned Miklošičeva and Čopova Streets and Slovenska Street, learned about the operation of the free electric vehicle service Kavalir, and gained insight into the Urbana payment system, the BicikeLJ bike-sharing network, and the new unified regional e-bike system, BicikEL.
Pilot Measures in the Ljubljana Urban Region
Representatives of RRA LUR and Nomago presented our activities and preparations for the pilot deployment, scheduled to run in the region from September 2027 through March 2028, focusing on two primary mobility measures:
- Demand – Responsive Transport (DRT): Setting up a flexible demand-responsive transport service in peri-urban areas to improve accessibility to health centres, railway and bus stations, shops and other key locations identified as essential by local residents.
- Expansion of the Regional E-Bike Network: Supplementing and closing network gaps in the new regional e-bike sharing system, BicikEL. As part of the project, we will install 3 new stations and provide a total of 10 e-bikes across selected peri-urban areas, enhancing inter-municipal connectivity and addressing coverage gaps within the regional public transport network.
Networking and Collaboration for a Shared Future
The meeting in Ljubljana was marked by active networking, collaboration, and constructive exchange of experience among European partners. Such international cooperation represents an important step towards transferring good practices between regions and reinforces the path of peri-urban areas in the Ljubljana Urban Region towards a sustainable, connected, and climate-neutral future.
