SmartMOVE employer’s approach to sustainable mobility in Ljubljana urban region presented at POLIS 2023

  • 14. 12. 2023

The Annual POLIS Conference 2023, held on 29-30 November in Leuven, Belgium, stands as Europe’s foremost sustainable urban mobility event. Serving as a platform for cities and regions to showcase their transport achievements, the conference drew a diverse audience of mobility experts, practitioners, and decision-makers from both the public and private sectors. The Regional development agency of the Ljubljana urban region (RRA LUR) was among the presenters, setting up an example of employer’s approach to sustainable mobility within the SmartMOVE project.

Following the successful 2022 POLIS Annual Conference in Brussels, Belgium, the 2023 edition provided an opportunity for cities and regions to showcase their transport achievements to a large audience of mobility experts, practitioners and decision-makers. Over two days, the event featured 32 thought-provoking sessions and 2 plenaries. As part of the conference, Leuven offered 12 site visits on November 30, showcasing its cutting-edge urban mobility solutions and cultural highlights. Leuven, recognized as the 2020 European Capital of Innovation, boasts a unique cooperation model that unites residents, institutions, and organizations to co-innovate and apply solutions for climate change, quality of life, and a sustainable, accessible, and inclusive mobility system.

The conference opened with a plenary session titled ‘It’s the Economy, Stupid!,’ exploring the intersection of sustainable transport, economic growth, social cohesion, and decarbonization. The session emphasized the need for a clear dialogue, evidence-based decision-making, and cross-sector collaboration to address challenges and move towards sustainable urban mobility.

Key presentations in the Regional Mobility Section of the conference: “Collaborate to Innovate” included the following topics: Integrated Planning for Mobility Plans, Ile-de-France Region Environmental Master Plan and Cycle Superhighway Collaboration – example from Netherlands and Employers’ Approaches to Sustainable Mobility Management in the Ljubljana Urban Region. Presenting for RRA LUR was Klemen Gostič, focusing on mobility plans, created within the project.

The Annual POLIS Conference 2023 succeeded in fostering meaningful discussions and collaborations, particularly in the realm of regional mobility. As cities and regions continue to grapple with the challenges of sustainable urban mobility, events like these play a pivotal role in sharing insights, best practices, and innovative solutions for a more sustainable and inclusive future.
