RRA LUR at the TERRAIN Project Meeting and Study Visit in Skopje

  • 6. 10. 2026

Representatives of the Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR) participated in the 5th TERRAIN Project Meeting and Study Visit, held in Skopje, North Macedonia, on 29 and 30 September 2026. Hosted by the City of Skopje, the meeting brought together project partners to review progress, exchange experiences and coordinate activities for the final phase of the TERRAIN project, implemented within the Interreg IPA ADRION Programme.

From pilot activities to transferring solutions to other areas

The first day of the meeting focused on the progress of TERRAIN pilot actions, the results of the third round of Living Labs and the next steps towards supporting the transition to sustainable and net-zero urban mobility. Particular attention was also given to capacity building and upscaling activities aimed at transferring the knowledge and solutions developed within TERRAIN to other cities and regions.

RRA LUR plays an important role in this process, working together with the lead partner CERTH on the coordination and implementation of TERRAIN capacity-building and upscale actions. During the meeting, we also presented the progress of the Slovenian pilot area and the experience gained through cooperation with local stakeholders.

In the Ljubljana Urban Region, TERRAIN activities have focused particularly on sustainable mobility and micromobility. Together with the municipalities of Medvode and Dobrova–Polhov Gradec, we have been monitoring the pilot implementation and expansion of the shared e-bike system, while the TERRAIN Living Labs have enabled us to gather feedback and experiences from users and other local stakeholders. The lessons learned provide valuable input for further sustainable mobility planning at the regional level.

Exploring sustainable mobility solutions in Skopje

An important part of the programme was the study visit, which provided partners with an opportunity to learn more about current and planned mobility solutions in Skopje.

Among the examples visited was the transformation of a former public bus terminal into a pedestrian zone and public space. By relocating bus operations, the previously traffic-dominated area was transformed into a more attractive public space, improving pedestrian accessibility and safety while contributing to lower air pollution and noise levels.

Partners were also introduced to the City Train project, designed as a faster, cost-efficient and environmentally friendly public transport solution aimed at reducing congestion and encouraging a shift from private cars to public transport.

The study visit also included the Skopje Traffic Control Centre, where we learned about real-time traffic management, traffic data collection, video surveillance and the city’s adaptive traffic control system.

Another key topic was the planned Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Line 1, where representatives of the City of Skopje presented the proposed corridor, stations and interchange points, as well as the planned integration of the BRT system with the existing bus network.

TERRAIN entering its final phase

In the coming months, RRA LUR will continue with the final monitoring and evaluation of the Slovenian pilot and organise the 4th Living Lab, bringing stakeholders together once again to assess the pilot results and key lessons learned.

Another important focus will be on upscaling and knowledge transfer activities. The experience gained through TERRAIN will be linked to ongoing sustainable mobility planning processes in the Ljubljana Urban Region and transferred to other territories where the project’s approaches and results can provide added value.

As a project partner and mentor, RRA LUR will also continue supporting TERRAIN partners in completing the remaining activities and joint project deliverables. The final phase of the project will focus on evaluating results, transferring good practices and ensuring that the knowledge and solutions developed through TERRAIN can contribute to more sustainable, integrated and user-oriented mobility beyond the project’s pilot areas.
