Rising intensity of TERRAIN activities in May for a carbon-neutral mobility in central Serbia and the Ljubljana urban region

  • 30. 5. 2025

May was an exceptionally dynamic and content-rich month for the partners of the TERRAIN project – Twinning and Cooperation for the Transition to Carbon-Neutral Mobility. Two key events took center stage, strengthening international cooperation and deepening our shared understanding of the challenges of sustainable mobility.

On May 14–15, a TERRAIN project partners’ meeting was held in Belgrade, Serbia, followed by a study visit to the nearby city of Pančevo. Mentors and mentees participated in workshops and presentations, discussing the project’s progress so far, current challenges, and possibilities for implementing pilot measures toward climate-neutral mobility. In Pančevo, partners observed best practices in sustainable transport planning and an ongoing pilot project aimed at improving daily mobility between Pančevo and Belgrade.

The experiences and good practices shared in Belgrade and Pančevo were also presented to the participants of the 2nd Living Lab, taking place shortafter in Ljubljana, organized on May 27 by the Regional Development Agency of the Ljubljana Urban Region (RRA LUR), further enriching the knowledge and collaboration among local stakeholders. The event brought together numerous stakeholders from the region, including representatives of 12 municipalities, transport professionals, transport service providers, and the interested public. A regional workshop was held with key stakeholders, addressing the ongoing update of municipal Sustainable Urban Mobility Plans (SUMPs) and the upcoming update of the regional mobility strategy, which is aligned with current spatial planning processes.

Guidelines were also presented for the development of an action plan for a pilot project on the establishment and monitoring of micromobility solutions in one or more smaller municipalities within the Ljubljana Urban Region. Special attention was given to the possibilities for co-financing various measures such as the redesign of streets and roads in line with sustainable mobility principles, dedicated areas for public transport, and infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists—as envisioned in local or regional SUMPs. These measures support the shift away from private motor vehicle use and significantly improve infrastructure for public transport, walking, and cycling.

The TERRAIN project continues to demonstrate that cooperation and stakeholder engagement are essential for a successful transition to smart, sustainable, and inclusive mobility of the future.

Do you travel to or commute through Ljubljana Urban Region often or even daily? Please share your opinion in the TERRAIN SURVEY!

We invite everyone who travels daily or several times a week within the Ljubljana Urban Region to take part in a survey that will help us better understand the travel habits, mobility needs, and opportunities for improvement in the region.

The survey is conducted in English: TERRAIN Project – Citizens Survey. For more information on the project, please visit the TERRAIN project website.

You can follow the latest information about the project on the Interreg IPA ADRION website and on the TERRAIN project website.
