TAAS Project Partners on a Study Visit in the Town of Thuir, France
The town of Thuir, located in the Aspres region of the French Pyrenees, hosted the fourth partner meeting of the TAAS project on June 11 and 12, 2025. Partners and stakeholders from nine European countries gathered to report on implemented activities and the progress of the TAAS project, discuss next steps toward tourism digitalisation and instruments supporting smart and sustainable development, and to explore examples of good practices in the local environment.
This meeting was organized by the Aspres-Thuir Intermunicipal Tourist Association, one of the project partners. In her welcome speech, Nicole Gonzalez, President of the Aspres-Thuir Tourist Office, warmly greeted the participants of the study visit and emphasized the importance of using modern digital tools in cooperation with various partners and stakeholders who co-create and implement strategies in the field of smart and sustainable tourism.
On the first day of the visit, project partners discussed progress reports and presentations across various thematic areas and outlined future guidelines for discovering new and innovative solutions and approaches in tourism digitalisation – in the spirit of “from inspiration to action.”
The afternoon session was marked by a series of presentations showcasing local practices and innovations integrated into the traditional tourism elements of the area. Paula Sanchez presented how digital animation can enhance the experience of the historic Caves BYRRH wine cellar, a key heritage site of Thuir. Marion Cuffy from the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Pyrénées-Orientales introduced the ROMTUR project, focused on the digitalisation of Roman heritage. Jean-Charles Ratel from Real Illusion then demonstrated an innovative application in the tourism sector, taking project partners into an immersive virtual reality experience that brings historical storytelling to life.
Participants had the chance to see how new technologies can create fresh experiences within existing historical spaces during a guided tour of the Caves BYRRH, which included a digital escape room activity.
The second day continued the exploration of local cultural and tourism heritage through innovation. Just a short walk from the town center lies a new local tourism gem – Villa Palauda. This grand estate of the former owners of Caves BYRRH, who played an important role in the region’s development, is set to become a new tourist destination that will continue the story of the famous wine cellar with rich and meaningful experiences for visitors.
The study visit then continued with a group trip to the medieval village of Castelnou. As guide Line Ramirez explained, the castle that stands today was built on the ruins of an older one, which is why it was named Castelnou – meaning “New Castle.” The castle offers breathtaking views and, through digital good practices, visitors can discover the historical background in engaging ways. With the help of new technologies, the stories of the past come alive, enriching the cultural and tourist offer and making it easier to understand historical events.
The region’s commitment to sustainable tourism is also reflected in its winemaking. Laurianne Tournier, who was practically born into the profession, presented her boutique wines, produced through sustainable winemaking practices.
The TAAS partner and stakeholder meeting in France concluded with a shared commitment to continue the planned activities and to prepare for the 5th Study Visit, scheduled to take place in Sweden and Finland in the autumn.
