Multimodal Hubs as a Key to Sustainable Mobility in the Ljubljana Urban Region
The development of efficient public transport in Slovenia presents a major challenge due to dispersed settlement patterns and relatively small towns. These factors, among others, have contributed to a high dependence on private cars. In the search for solutions, multimodal hubs have emerged as a key element in connecting different mobility systems. These hubs combine various forms of public transport, P+R (Park and Ride) facilities, bike-sharing systems, and other modes of transportation. The importance of multimodal hubs was the focus of the event titled “MULTIMODAL HUBS: Their Importance for Enhancing Sustainable Mobility”, which took place on March 27, 2025, in Gornja Radgona at the Pomurje Fair.
At the event, organized by DRC – Association for Transport and Transport Infrastructure of Slovenia in cooperation with the Ljubljana Road Association, Maribor Road Association, and the Pomurje Fair, experts presented various perspectives and approaches to multimodal mobility. Gregor Pretnar, PNZ d.o.o., emphasized the importance of hubs for improving sustainable mobility, while Janez Nared, ZRC SAZU, presented integrated planning along transport corridors and hubs. Klemen Gostič, Regional development agency of the Ljubljana urban region, presented multimodal hubs as an opportunity to address spatial and transport challenges in the Ljubljana Urban Region. Uroš Rozman, Koroška regional development agency, introduced projects for multimodal points in Maribor and Dravograd. Simon Detellbach, UL FGG, pointed out some missed planning opportunities in organizing multimodal hubs in Ljubljana and Slovenia, while Suzana Habjanič Gorše, The Slovenian Infrastructure Agency, presented the establishment of a P+R system in railway areas. Stefan Varešić and Franc Zemljič, The Slovenian Infrastructure Agency, focused on standardized access arrangements for people with disabilities and persons with reduced mobility to public transport.
Together with the roundtable discussion, the event served as an important platform for the exchange of ideas and opinions on the future of sustainable mobility in Slovenia. Participants had the opportunity to engage in discussions and contribute to shaping a more sustainable and efficient transport system, aimed at reducing dependence on private cars and improving connectivity between different transport modes.
